5: Field Trip - Hyams Beach

Sample Itinerary

The times given here are Eastern Daylight Saving (Summer). Actual events will depend upon weather, tides and group requirements. The field trip will not be cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

  • 8:00 am: Depart Sydney, lunch at Berry, and last minute photographic supplies at Nowra. Briefing on environment during the journey.
  • Arrive Hyams Beach about 11.30am and checked into accommodation.
  • 12.30pm: Lunch at HB Store.
  • 2.00pm: Introduction to the geology and marine environment. Opportunity for swimming in the usually superb clear water of the Bay. Involves rock hopping along wave cut platforms (if tide allows) to Greenfieldís Beach returning along NPWS track to Chinamanís Beach and inland through ancient dunes to Hyams Beach. Free time on return
  • 6.00pm: Workshop on the walk (Vegetation, geology, photography).
  • Sunset: Great photo opportunities
  • 8:30pm: Barbecue
  • After dark: If tide low, some may be interested in observing rock pool life.
  • Sunrise over the Bay
  • 7:00am: Breakfast
  • 8:00am: Walk along Seamans Beach (swimming as we go), observing the effect of wave erosion, range of dune vegetation returning inland behind the old dunes to the Village. Stops along the way for discussions on the environment.
  • 11.00am (approximate and depends on need and when participants return): Workshop on problems encountered and further discussion of environment.
  • 12.00pm: Lunch Ė Individually organised.
  • 1.00pm: Booderee National Park and Botanic Gardens, Cave Beach and Wreck Bay.
  • 5-6:00pm: Return to accommodation and free time.

  • 8:00pm: Barbecue and workshop.


  • 8:00am: Climb escarpment to heath and walk to Old Quarry. Landcare discussion on revegetating the area. Return along Scribbly Gum Walk to Chinamanís Beach and Hyams Beach.
  • 11:30am: Late breakfast - early lunch HB Store.

2:00pm: Depart for Sydney returning via Royal National Park to view the rock cut platforms.
