04 Newcastle

There was a short period of living in a garage in Graceville (Brisbane) and then somehow we ended up in Newcastle with Aunt Peg and Nathaniel Lieberman. I think Nat was trained as a tailor in London but not sure about this. He ran a clothing shop and they lived in Adamstown Heights. They were Jewish and I recall enjoying the food and the Sabbath.

Bill came over and he and Bet were married in Newcastle and had the reception at the Newcastle Yacht Club. Then we all – Betty, Bill, Elsa Harkness, Malcolm and self – flew off to Western Australia in a DC4 Skymaster – I think the first pressurized passenger plane.

Malcolm: Sometime in 1949 Bet arrived back in Brisbane and we all finished up in Newcastle at Peggy Lieberman’s home. I had work at an electric lamp manufacturing company in Newcastle city for a while. Bill arrived and he and Bet were married in Newcastle. We all went to Sydney and caught the plane to Perth via Melbourne and Adelaide.

Ihian will continue the story from there on to Brookton and I will continue on about subsequent events in Western Australia in a later chapter.
